Low-fuss sharpening
This article uses published sources. It does not include my own hands-on test.
Scope of this note
Shapton Kuromaku / Pro 1000 is my suggested starting point when short preparation time matters. This note uses manufacturer information rather than my own comparative tests.
Preparation
Shapton’s FAQ distinguishes normal use from first use: routine use does not require a soak, while it recommends five to six minutes before the very first use. Follow the instructions supplied with your particular stone.
Choose a range and grit
Kuromaku / Pro is the range discussed here. Glass and other Shapton ranges have different formats; do not assume every Shapton stone has the same dimensions or instructions. Around 1000 grit is a practical starting point for routine sharpening.
Maintain the working surface
Secure the stone, keep it wet as directed, check flatness as it wears and dry it before storage. Manufacturer descriptions of wear resistance do not mean the surface never needs flattening.
Keep the first setup small
One medium stone is enough to learn edge formation and burr removal. A leather strop is optional. Compare the current delivered price with King Deluxe 1000 and choose according to cost and preparation preferences.
Takeaways
- Check the model, dimensions and maker’s care instructions.
- Compare the delivered price and keep suitable equipment you already own.
